Nanotechnology is an interesting field of science and technology. It is has led to several revolutionary discoveries. There are several components of nanotechnology such as nanoparticles, nanorods, nanotubes etc. Nano technology is basically the study of matter on an atomic, molecular, or supra-molecular scale. It can also be defined as the study of substance whose at least one dimension is sized from 1 to 100 nanometers.
In order to use nanoparticles to their best effect in various industries, they are used in various forms such as nanotubes, Nano rods nanowires etc. Carbon nanotubes are one of the major form of nanotechnology.
They are basically a cylindrical-shaped material made of carbon. They have a diameter which can be measured on the nanometer scale. The cylindrical-shaped tube has an inner layer of graphite which appears somewhat like a rolled-up net wire with a continuous endless hexagonal web filled with carbon molecules at the top of the hexagons.
Carbon Nanotubes are available in different structural types that are the Single-wall Nanotubes (SWNT), Multi-wall Nanotubes (MWNT), Double-wall Nanotubes (DWNT). For example, the Double walled Carbon Nanotubes are made up of exactly two rolled layers (cylindrical tubes) of graphene. The diameters of these nanotubes are usually between of 5 nm to 50 nm. The distance between both the layers of the DWNT is approximately similar to the distance between graphene layers in graphite.
Double Walled Nanotubes Are A Mixture Of SWNT And MWNTS
The DWNT is basically a mixture of SWNT and MWNT both in terms of Structural similarities as well as properties. Double Walled Nanotubes has great properties when compared with others like the electrical and thermal stability of the SWNT and the flexibility of the MWNT.
But double-walled tubes are considered to be interesting as their properties are somewhat similar to SWNT but they are stronger and better able to survive extreme conditions. The distance between both the walls of DWNT makes it electrical properties a lot stronger. Also the diameter of the tube especially the inner one has a great impact of its semiconducting properties.
It turned out that both the distance between the walls — as small as a fraction of a nanometer — and the individual structure of the tubes impact the double-walls’ electrical properties. In addition, the researchers found the diameter of the tube.
Carbon Nanotubes Are Highly Used In The Manufacturing On Displays And Sensors
However, since the outer layer of DWNT is modified it helps in preserving is intrinsic properties. Also, researchers have stated that DWNT has better thermal and chemical stability than SWNT. Thus DWNT is widely used in the manufacturing of gas sensors and dielectrics, as well as to more research oriented applications such as field-emission displays, nanocomposite materials, and Nanosensors.
In terms of research Double Walled Nano Tubes are greatly unexplored despite having several unique properties as well as sharing some with the SWNT and MWNT. For example the DWNT has a more stiffness as compared to the other two, thus this can be highly effective in the medical industry especially for imaging and sensors.
